Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Mustoe is a rhinoplasty specialist in Chicago who has performed more than 2,000 rhinoplasty procedures to date. His rhinoplasty patients can attest to the fact that small changes to the nose can create vast improvements.
Dr. Mustoe performs rhinoplasty – also called nose surgery or a "nose job" – in Chicago to improve the shape and structure of the nose. From a cosmetic standpoint, improvements may include one or more of the following:
Nose surgery can also be performed to correct sinus or breathing problems, congenital defects, or damage caused by injury or prior surgeries. Often nose surgery combines both cosmetic and functional benefits, so you can look and feel your best.
Few plastic surgeons in the world can match Dr. Mustoe's extensive training and experience performing rhinoplasty. In addition to being a board-certified plastic surgeon, he is also certified in otolaryngology and has performed more than 2,000 rhinoplasty surgeries. Dr. Mustoe's expertise enables him to produce rhinoplasty results that are completely "transparent," meaning no one should be able to tell that you've had plastic surgery. His years of research and experience have culminated in surgical innovations that achieve predictable, natural-looking results that enhance your appearance while still maintaining the character of your nose. Furthermore, patients experience a shorter, more comfortable recovery as a result of the innovative techniques Dr. Mustoe uses.
Through extensive research and experience, Dr. Mustoe has developed several innovations for a better rhinoplasty procedure and result. These include:
Whether performed for cosmetic or functional improvement, nose surgery involves making changes to the internal framework of the nose. Dr. Mustoe will carefully make these changes to enhance the appearance of the nose. He may also correct such functional issues as a deviated septum, sinus problems or other breathing issues.
Dr. Mustoe accesses the interior anatomy of the nose by placing incisions within the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or through a small incision on the underside of the nose (open rhinoplasty). The approach Dr. Mustoe uses will depend on the issues being corrected. The open approach allows a change in the shape of the internal framework supporting the nose while retaining its strength, which allows confident correction of the deformity without fear of future collapse or pinching of the nose. Once all of the internal changes are complete, he repositions the skin and sutures the incision closed.
Using precise surgical techniques, Dr. Mustoe can reshape the cartilage and bone while reducing the need for grafts and major structural changes. He can reduce the size of a large nose without creating a surgically altered look using a technique he developed to precisely control the shape and projection of the tip. Without drastic changes to the patient's unique appearance, Dr. Mustoe creates a more aesthetically pleasing nose that naturally enhances their other facial characteristics.
If I could give Dr. Mustoe more than five stars, I would! I only wish I would have had the procedure done a lot sooner. Dr. Mustoe did an amazing job. He listened to exactly what I wanted. The recovery time was a breeze due to his technique. I had MINIMAL bruising and did not need any painkillers. I was back to traveling in a week. I HIGHLY recommend him." -mlm1202, rhinoplasty patient on RealSelf Read more reviews
Following the procedure, the nose is splinted for about a week to stabilize it and aid in proper healing. During this time, most visible bruising should resolve. Patients typically can return to work or normal activities in approximately 7 days. Initial swelling will subside within a few weeks, but changes in the shape of the nose will continue to emerge for up to a year.
While everyone's experience will be unique, Dr. Mustoe's patients typically benefit from a much more comfortable and shorter recovery than the average rhinoplasty patient. His techniques minimize tissue damage, bruising, and bleeding – therefore, his patients have less swelling, do not require nasal packing, and can feel good about their appearance as soon as the splint is removed. Most of Dr. Mustoe's patients require only over-the-counter pain medication to manage their discomfort.
Dr. Mustoe's techniques minimize bruising, which is largely resolved within a week and fully resolved in 10 days for most patients. For the occasional patient who has more bruising or who desires an accelerated recovery, he now offers a state-of-the-art laser treatment which dramatically reduces bruising with a single brief treatment performed during a postoperative visit.

Approximately 1/3 of the rhinoplasty procedures Dr. Mustoe performs are revision rhinoplasty procedures to correct undesirable outcomes from previous rhinoplasties performed elsewhere. Sometimes his revision patients have had as many as 3 or 4 previous surgeries. Knowledge of the problems created from previous surgeries has given Dr. Mustoe the experience to avoid these problems in his primary rhinoplasty procedures.
A revision rhinoplasty procedure is usually more involved and may take longer an initial rhinoplasty. It can involve harvesting cartilage from the ear or rib, and fascia grafts from the temple. Dr. Mustoe is able to do virtually all of these procedures under local anesthesia with sedation, with similar advantages in reduction and swelling and more rapid recovery.
Several factors influence the cost of any cosmetic surgery procedure, and the range can be fairly wide. That's especially true for rhinoplasty, which is considered one of the more complicated procedures performed by plastic surgeons. Cosmetic surgery costs also vary depending on the geographic location of the practice. The cost of rhinoplasty in Chicago can range from $2,000 to $15,000. Factors such as the plastic surgeon's experience and level of expertise, whether the procedure is a primary rhinoplasty or a revision surgery, and the extent of the surgery all influence the final cost. A full rhinoplasty, for example, will cost more than a procedure that only involves the tip of the nose.
