If you are in good health and do not experience frequent weight fluctuations, you may be a candidate. Many women consider breast augmentation make their breast size in proportion with their overall figure, while others may want to restore breast volume diminished by weight loss or pregnancy. Women who would also like to correct sagging may benefit from a breast lift in conjunction with breast augmentation.
Should I Choose Silicone or Saline Implants?
Your choice of implants will depend on your individual preferences and goals. Silicone and saline implants each have specific advantages, and limitations. Silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue but may require a longer incision. In addition, replacement surgery is more involved. Saline implants are filled with a sterile solution, which the body can absorb harmlessly in case of a leak or rupture. For more information on implant materials, shapes and sizes, visit our Breast Implant Options page.
What Are My Incision Options?
Your surgeon will most likely perform your augmentation using one of 3 incision types:
Inframammary (along the crease under your breast)
Periareolar (along the lower boundary of the areola)
Transaxillary (in the armpit)
The incisions used for your procedure and the specific placement of your implants will depend on the nature of your surgery, as well as your choice of implants. In almost all cases, the surgeon places implants beneath the pectoral muscle, except in some replacement procedures where the implants are already above the muscle.
What Type of Anesthetic Will I Receive?
Your specific course of anesthesia will depend on your procedure. When possible, our surgeons use local anesthesia with conscious sedation for breast augmentation procedures.
What Will My Recovery Be Like?
Recovery from our breast augmentation procedures is often shorter and more comfortable than recovery from surgery performed by other plastic surgeons in Chicago. Dr. Mustoe has done comprehensive research on wound healing and scarring. He and Dr. Sinno have incorporated this knowledge into meticulous surgical techniques which minimize swelling, and bruising, with an accelerated recovery, and minimized scarring. You will receive specific instructions from your surgeon about your recuperation, which will include early stretching. No special garments or bandages are needed. During the 4 to 6 weeks following surgery, you will notice your implants easing into a more natural position as you heal.

Extensive exercises in which your pectoral muscles are utilized should be restricted for 4 to 6 weeks. Your post-care instructions and follow-up appointments will provide additional information about your individual time frame.
Can I still Have Mammograms After I Have Implants?
Yes, you can and should continue to have mammograms after your breast augmentation. Remember to inform the practitioner performing the mammogram that you have breast implants.
