Board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Thomas Mustoe and Dr. Sammy Sinno offer dermal fillers at their Chicago, Illinois, practice to help patients of all ages sculpt facial contours and achieve a radiant, youthful look. In addition to offering injectable fillers, they perform fat transfer, an innovative technique that uses your own fat to add facial volume, delivering natural, long-lasting results.
Injectable fillers work by “filling” or elevating the skin to erase lines, add definition, and restore youthful contours. Dr. Mustoe and Dr. Sinno offer a wide variety of filler treatment options to help patients achieve personalized and transformative results without surgery or lengthy downtime.
For patients experiencing early stages of age-related volume loss, injectable fillers restore a more youthful appearance and potentially delay the need for more invasive surgery. Dermal fillers benefit patients who wish to:
While fillers offer immediate and noticeable results, patients with advanced aging symptoms are usually better candidates for facial plastic surgery procedures such as facelift or brow lift.
At our downtown Chicago practice, we offer a range of injectable fillers, including:
Dr. Mustoe or Dr. Sinno will review your injectable filler options and help you determine which one will best achieve your goals. They may also recommend BOTOX® Cosmetic to address dynamic facial wrinkles such as crow’s feet and frown lines.
JUVÉDERM is commonly used for treating lines and folds on the lower face, particularly the nasolabial folds, smile lines, or “parentheses” that frame the mouth. It’s composed of hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body, and adds volume and moisture beneath the skin. There is very little risk of allergic reaction with JUVÉDERM, as it is biocompatible and biodegradable. It is harmlessly eliminated by the body over the course of 6 to 9 months.
Another injectable filler from the JUVÉDERM family, VOLUMA XC is specifically formulated to restore volume to the cheeks for a plump, uplifted look. Its thicker gel formulation is designed for deep injection and durability, with results lasting up to 2 years. VOLUMA XC is also a safe, biocompatible HA-based filler.
HA-based injectables are also commonly used as lip fillers for patients who want to plump and shape thin or thinning lips.
Unlike HA fillers, RADIESSE is composed of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. This unique formulation allows RADIESSE to stimulate collagenesis — the production of your body’s own natural collagen. Once the gel carrier is broken down by the body, the microspheres remain, and the body builds a network of collagen fibers around them. Eventually, the microspheres dissolve, but the network of collagen fibers remains, adding volume at the treatment site. RADIESSE is primarily indicated for use around the mouth and chin, and results typically last up to a year or longer.
Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid, a safe, synthetic substance that is biocompatible and biodegradable. It corrects facial wrinkles and folds in the lower face by replacing collagen that has been lost with age. Compared to HA fillers, Sculptra treatment is a gradual process, with results that emerge over several months. A full Sculptra treatment typically involves 3 injection sessions spaced a few months apart, with results that last up to 2 years.
In addition to fillers, Dr. Mustoe and Dr. Sinno specialize in facial rejuvenation through fat transfer, also referred to as autologous fat transplantation or micro-lipoinjection. This advanced technique uses a patient’s own fat to add volume to areas of the face. Our surgeons also use fat transfer to enhance the results of cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation and facelifts.
An internationally renowned facial rejuvenation specialist, Dr. Mustoe has more than 22 years of fat grafting experience, and his expertise in this area has been recognized by a national publication (More magazine).
Dr. Mustoe and Dr. Sinno use harvested fat to improve the contours of the face and fill wrinkles and folds. Unlike injectable fillers, fat transfer requires some recovery time. However, many patients prefer this technique to fillers for a variety of reasons, including:
Fat transfer is commonly performed as an office procedure. During treatment, fat is harvested via liposuction from unwanted areas such as the thighs, buttocks, or abdomen. Dr. Mustoe or Dr. Sinno uses very fine cannulas to expertly suction away fat before it is processed to remove excess moisture and damaged fat cells. Then, the purified fat is injected into the desired areas of the face. Fat transfer has evolved to maximize fat survival and minimize the need for revisions.
For optimal results, patients usually require 3 to 4 treatments over a 6-month period. Fat transferred to the face may last up to 3 years in some patients.
Dermal fillers are not considered painful. Most fillers contain a numbing agent called lidocaine, and we may apply a topical anesthetic to enhance your comfort. After treatment, you can immediately resume your daily routine.
The cost of dermal fillers varies based on the type of product and quantity used to achieve your aesthetic goals. During your consultation, Dr. Mustoe or Dr. Sinno will share a personalized treatment plan with detailed pricing to help you budget accordingly.
The longevity of fillers depends on which filler is used and other individual factors, such as how quickly your body metabolizes each product. In general, injectable fillers can last from 6 months up to a few years, depending on your specific treatment.
Yes, Dr. Mustoe and Dr. Sinno frequently recommend combining fillers with other rejuvenating services such as BOTOX and laser treatments. Combining injectable fillers with neuromodulators is often referred to as a liquid facelift.
